Six of the twelve Maiden candidates were withdrawn. The Wairarapa-owned Pink Heather (a place-getter at Tauherenikau at Easter time) was sent out a good favourite. She won with little to spare from Achilleus (Achilles—Dexterity), with British Rose (Bezonian — Lawn Rose) close up third. Evadne and Altcar, reserved for the Flying, and Munie were withdrawn from the Ugbrooke Welter Handicap. Tho latter got away from her attendant the previous morning, and galloped from the course to tho town. The Opaki-trained Montana was a better favourite than Want, while Achilledos (who has recently been showing good form in Auckland) was only a moderate third favourite. They finished in the order in which they were backed on the machine. Montana (the best of- the Elevations) came away in the straight and scored comfortably. The Taranaki-owned Coropet (fullbrother to Astor) carried nearly half of tho money invested on tho Electric Hack Handicap. He got hung up in the tapes, and never had a chance. Excitement (who delayed the start by refusing to face the right way) began smartly, and led all the way. With one exception he was tho biggest outsider of the field, and his supporters got a good price. Multoe did fsie best of the three Tren-tham-trained horses in the race. Monologue (who arrived this morning),' Waipunui, Peroneal, and Montana were pulled out of the Cup. Rene was a good favourite*, the other runners being prottyrevenly backed. -The Hawkes Bayowned DiaVolo, who ran a good race at Hastings on Friday, got a break in the first furlong and was not afterwards headed, winning comfortably from Rene, with Imhier and Byron close up. The handsome trophy attached to the race was presented by Mr. H. D. Vavasour, president of the club, to Mr. P. Ncagle, owner and breeder of the winner, whose first appearance it was at the Riverlands course. Arlington (R. Hatch) made his reappearance in the Opawa Walter Hack Handicap. He was in front for six furlongs when Roue joined him. A hundred yards from homo, Hap Dha and Ruapara joined in, the latter getting up on the post. It was a slashing finish I between four. The winner was one; of the least- fancied, and his backers got a double figure dividend. Ruapara was bred in the Blenheim district, bat is now trained by his owner at Palmerston North. The three members of A. | Goodman's Trentham team each filled second place. Arlington, Coropet, and Royal Sleeves I were brought out again in the Autumn Hack Handicap, in which Haumakaka (a winner at Trentham) was sent out a solid favourite. Royal Sleeves began well, and led to within a hundred yards of tho post, where Whisperer headed him and won with a little to spare. Evadne (a stable-mate" of the Cup winner) was favourite for the Flying, in which there were only five runners. Margarita, led to the turn, when she ran out to the outside of the courso and carried Altcar with her. ; This enabled Evadne to slip up on. the rails and get the verdict with a little to spare from Margarita, who finished under the judge's box. Evadne 1 is a half-sister to the Cup winner and carries the same colours. J. O'Shea rode three winners. STAKE RECORDS Warstep's great performance of winning three two-mile races in one season is one that has never previously been equalled. Out of twelve starts she was only twice out of a place— at the Dunedin Spring Meeting in October, when she was not ready, and in the Awapuni, Gold Cup, in which she made her final appearance as a four-year-old. At Riccarton in the spring she dead-heated in the New Zealand Cup, ran second in the Canterbury Cup, and third in the Stead Gold Cup. At Auckland she won the Cup, ran second in the Islington Plate, and won the Auckland Plate, at Dunedin she won the Cup and- Hazlitt Memorial, and at Riccarton added the Great Autumn Handicap to her list. At Trentham she placed the Trentham Gold Cup to her owner's credit.
