STATE TIMBER RIGHTS

PROTEST FROM OHAKUNE. (BT TELBOIUFH,— mBB ASSOCIATION.) OHAKUNE, This Day. At a special meeting of the Ohaknne Borough Council, held last night, the following resolution was passed : " That this Council of the Borough of Ohaknne strongly protests against the action of the Railway Department in handing over to the Rangataua Timber Compahy sections 1 and 2, block V., Karioi S.D., and adjoining sections which were reserved at great expense for a State sawmill. The Railway Department's action is most unjust to this town, as the starting of the mill was looked forward to, and would have tended to promote settlement here. For the starting of this mill a siding was put in and a considerable amount of preliminary work was done. The council also protests against the handing of such valuable bush areas over te any private individual or company without open competition, more especially to a company already holding large timber rights, as in the present instance. The council trusts that the original intention to put in a State mill will be carried out, and that the published negotiations with the Rangataua Company will be at once terminated." A copy of the resolution has been forwarded toi tho; Premier.
