/ ——* Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., presided at to-day's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. John Anderson was charged with assaulting Cecil Patrick Payne so as to cause him actual bodily harm. As Payne was unable ,lo appeal' on account of the injuries received a remand until next Wednesday was granted. On Mr. H. F. O'Leary's application bail was fixed at £50. A charge of theft of a suit of clothes was brought against Sydney Hunter. Hunter had been previously convicted of dishonesty, and the present offence was, in the words of the Magistrate, a particularly mean one. The clothes were taken from Thomas Neagle, with whom accused had been staying. A sentence of one month's hard labour was imposed. Patrick Ford and Nicholas Scallon were both fined 10s for drunkenness, the alternative being fixed at forty-eight hours in gaol. Five first-affend»ng inebriates received the usual treatment, LOWER HUTT CASES The monthly sitting of the Lower Hutt Magistrate's Court was heild this morning before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M. Messrs. J Wilkin and J. Cudby, J.P.s, were also on the Bench. For allowing stock to wander, H. Dormer and E. Pay were each fined ss, with costs (7s), in default two days' imprisonment. CIVIL ACTIONS. „ In the following civil cases judgment was given for plaintiff by default:— Gadsby Bros. v. Peter Dixon, £11 18s Id, costs £2 7s; Lower Hutt BoTough Council v. Mrs. P. M'Morran, £8 12s 6d, costs 13s; same v. Henry Leggatt, £11 1G& Id, costs 15s. The Inspector of Awards (Mr. M. Slaughter) "applied to have an action against the Westland Timber Company, a claim for £10 for an alleged breach of an award, reheard. Mr. J. C. Peacock opposed the application, which was refused, costs being disallowed. '
