There was one comparatively recent Mayor who used to leave his house for tho Town Hall each morning with his trousers pockets full of silver for distribution in gifts to the hard up who came to see him every morning at his rooms. Other Mayors before and after could tell the same tale of cases of hardship that are daily presented for their consideration fresh every morning. A considerable part of tho Mayor's forenoon is taken up in work of an eleemosynary character. The present Mayor has had quite a large list of morning callers. They show no sign of falling off now that ho has been , returned for another term. Many of them are bona fide 'applications for work j others again are seeking relief from the War Distress Fund or other funds or no funds, as tho case may be. Cases suitable for the Charitable Aid Committee are referred to that body. The pocketful of silver is, however, still indispensable, but 'it is not that so mjich as tho large amount of tho Mayor's time that goes in tho consideration of snch cases as have been referred 10.
