DESERTING STOKERS
(8T TELBORAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, 4th May. Arising out of the trouble between the stokehold crew of the Opouri and the master at tyttelton on Saturday, William Newton and George Patrick Finn were charged at the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court to-day that, being seamen lawfully engaged on the steamer Opouri, they did unlawfully desert her. Newton, in his statement, said it was the first of the month and payday, and as men on other vessels in port had been paid by midday he approached the skipper for his wages, which ho wanted before he left port, as his wife and'fam ily were at Lyttelton. He was paid after some argument, and his reason for deserting was that he was afraid the captain would strike him if there were j further words between them. i The Justices ordered each id pay the Court costs (7s 6d) and lawyer's fee (10s).
