MANY NEW BUILDINGS. (BT TELEGRAPH.— SPECIAL TO THE POSTj PALMERSTON N., This Da J; . There has been groat activity in building operations in Palmerston within the last few months, and it still continues. The new Bank of Australasia premises are noaring completion, and Messrs. Abraham and Williams's fine large offices and Messrs. C. M. Ross and Co.'s new drapery and general softgoods house in The Square, both in brick, are well on the way. In addition, three new picture houses, two' of them in The Square and the other in the immediate vicinity, are in k course of erection. Each of these buildings is of brick and modern in structure. At Long-buru the freezing works has been extended to double its storage capacity, and .brought right up to* date >in every department. This has been an extensive and costly work. Besides all this activity, houses have been, going up all over 1 the town. Palmerston i certainly seems' to have exhibited very little financial depression as the resuLt of the war. The shortage in frozen meat space on steamers is being felt in the Manawatu. The Longburn Freezing Works has now a storage capacity of nearly 100,000 carcases, and this limit has been nearly reached. Work has slackened off, and this week the works will not be running at their full capacity, which is about 1600 carcases, of aheap a day, besides the handling of beef. Farmers mostly are. freezing on their own account at present, and, it ma-y mean a serious matter to them. When the Longburn works are running sX their full capacity, from, 80 to 90 hands are, employed. The Rev. ,H.> G. Rosher.-and Mrs. Rosher, who are leaving at the end of the present, month for England owing to Mrs., Rosher's ill-health, are to be farewelled at a " "social" in which parishioners and townspeople will combine to do them honour and make them a suitable presentation.
