SEQUEL TO A LIFT FATALITY

NATIONAL BANK OF NEW ZEALAND CHARGED. (»T TEUSGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION) AUCKLAND, This Day. As a sequel to the lift accident which, caused the death of Margery Dewes on 27th March' last, the National Bank of New Zealand, as the owners of the Hobson Buildings, were charged that they left the lift in charge of a person under eighteen years of age, viz., a boy of sixteen years and ten months. Defendants pleaded guilty. The Magistrate expressed the opinion that the bank was in an unfortunate position. Ho thought Turnbull and Jones, the firm of contractors for the maintaining of the lift, were more responsible. It was explained that they could not be brought within the Act. The Magistrate imposed a minimum fine of £5, with costs, as the bank knew nothing of the matter, except so far as the Act made the owners technically responsible.
