ENGINEERS' WORK
NEW ZEALAND DISPUTE. The engineering ctispute, which was partly heard at Christchurch, was before the Arbitration Court in Wellington yesterday. Mr. Justice Stringer presided, and on the Bench with him were Messrs E. F. Duthie and J. A. M'Culkragh, representing the employers and workers respectively. Mr. S. J. Elston appeared for the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, and Mr. W. Pryor for the employers. Evidence is being heard at all centres, and the Court will make uniform awards, providing, of course, for local variations, and practically constituting a Dominion award. The union's demands are, briefly, for a- 44-hour week, and a general wage of Is 8d pei- hour, or 13s 4d per day, with Is B^d for pattern-makers, and Is 4£d for drillers, screwers, and other machinists not otherwise mentioned. Extra pay is asked for outside and dirty work, and 50 per cent, extra for night shifts.
