BUTTER EXPORT

<+ 'A MODIFIED PROHIBITION His Excellency tho Governor by notico in » Gazette Extraordinary, published yesterday, "Doth hereby prohibit the export of butter from the Baid Dominion to any destination save with the consent of tho Minister of Customs, such consent to bo granted only on tho making by the exporter, or by a responsible agent, servant, or representative of the exporter, of A statutory deblaration as to the ultimate destination of the consignment so to be exported." Some of the butter referred to has in some cases undoubtedly been used to fulfil contracts made by Australian exporting houses With Far Eastern firms. Oh the other hand, large quantities of butter have been purchased here at a very high price, Is 4d to Is 5d per pound on board the steamer at Wellington, for legitimate Australian requirementSj ono well-known Melbourne distributing firm being a very large buyer. Butter has also been bought for Adelaide, Perth, and Hobart, and, it is understood, has been required to meet a bona fide local shortage. Exporter* here are under the impression that if it can be showft that the butter is required for Australian consumption the consent of the Minister of Customs will not be Withheld. If that be so, and exports to Australia for Australian consumption be permitted, then the prohibition will not materially affect the drainage on New Zealand stocks in store, and the butter still being produced.
