BODY FOUND NEAR FOXTON A MYSTERY CLEARED UP.
The body of Mrs. Dixon, senior, of Bunnythorpe, was discovered on Sunday afternoon on the Rangitikei Beach, about ten miles north of Foxton Heads. The late Mrs. Dixon left her home on the morning of the 30tb January last, and although large search parties have been out, no trace of the lady was found until Sunday. The body was found in the sand about three yards above high water mark, and, with the exception, of the head, was covered in sand. Close by there were a number of fruit boxes, evidently collected by deceased and utilised as a protection from the wind. It is surmised that the deceased, having lost her way, had wandered on until exhausted. With the idea of attracting attention she had torn a small piece of calico from her clothing and tied it to a pieoe of stick. It was this cloth that led to the discovery of the body. There was no sign of the body having been in the water, and it is practically certain that deceased died of exposure and starvation. The late Mrs. Dixon was aged about 77 years, and was a well-known and highly-respected resident of Bunnythorpe for a number of years. An inquest was conducted yesterday afternoon, and a verdict of death from exposure was returned.
