LOWER HUTT BOROUGH MEETING OF THE COUNCIL.

The Lower Hutt Borough Council met last evening, the following being present : The Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin), and Councillors Hobbs, Ball, Parsonage, Brasell, Kempthorne, Meldrum, and Hodgins. A number of ratepayers wrote asking for the erection of two street lamps at the top of Willoughby-street and Kmght's-road and in Cornwall-street. After some discussion it was decided to erect a lamp in Willoughby-street. Regarding the storage of dangerous goods, the Wellington Fire Underwnters| Association submitted for the council's consideration certain clauses which that body suggested should be adopted as bylaws. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. A complaint against the deputyranger was also referred to the Works Committee. ENGINEER'S DEPARTMENT. The engineer (Mr. W. J. Roche) reported that as the part of the Main-road that had been treated in the same manner as restar looked like being a complete failure, he decided to treat the other half of the road in a more thorough, though possibly more expensive manner! As instructed at a recent meeting, 200 gallons of restar were procured, and a fine day was selected for giving the deck of the main bridge a dressing of restar and fine gravel. The restar had done excellent work — ordinary tar would never have stood so well. The Western Hutfc footpath appeared to be going down hard and fairly smooth. The night pound 'at Alicetown was finished. The pound lay much below the level of the footpath and street, and required several loads of gravel to bring it up to the proper level. The pound was now ready for use. Two connections had been made with the gas mains and one with the water mains, making the total number of connections to date 519 and 983 respectively. The report, together with the ranger's reports, was adopted.
