SINKING OF THE KAIPARA
CAPTAIN MAKEPEACE'S STORY. (Received Marcli 8. 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Captain Makepeace, recently captain of the steamer Kaipara. has arrived here in charge of the Middlesex. He states that on 16th August the Kainer Wilhelm der Grosse was sighted, and the commander megaphoned : "If you use your wireless we will use our guns. 1 ' The Germans boarded tho Kaipara. smashed her wireless apparatus, placed explosives in the stokehold, and ordered everyone to leave. They allowed the crew to take their clothes. It took the Germans one hour and a-half to sink the Kaipara. Twenty-three shots were fired.
