The police are at present enquiring as to the whereabouts of Joseph Kirkup, ranger to the Miramar Borough Council, who has been missing from his home since Wednesday morning last. So far no trace of him has been found. His friends would be glad to receive any information. "Fifty-one" writes to the Hawcm Star ! A story is going the rounds of the papers just now to the effect that dur> ing the Maori war a somewhat remarkable ruse was practised by the Native« when they ran short of lead for bullets. This they did by the use of a figure to represent a Maori, which would be exposed when troops were about, and thnu, draw Hie. A repetition of this plan is said to have provided, quite a harvest of lead. The only place 1 know of where there is reason to suppose the dummy plan was cairied out was somewhere about Hviirangi, and I well recollect that Taranaki Punch had an illustration of the figure and devoted a few verses to the ingenuity of the Maoris, the concluding line to each being: "And when we run short of lead, up goes the dummy." The statements published in The Post recently regarding the position of the poultry industry are hubatantiated in some degree in the annual report of tho Wairarapa Egg Circle, which states, inter aha: "Owing to what the committee considered an excessive price tendered for wheat, they did not enter into any contract for the past year, and owing to the very unsettled state of affairs at present it is unlikely any contract will be arranged for the current year. It is to be regretted that the Government failed to provide any relief for the poultry industry whilst they were fixing prices for wheat, etc., as their failure to dp so has brought about the wholesale selling off of ;poultry throughout the Dominion. The least the Government could have done towards helping the industry was to have stipulated that the bran and pollard produced from the wheat importeel by them should have been sold at a fixed reasonable price, whereas the price being charged is out of all proportion to the value of the product. It is unfortunate that the Governments of New Zealand, both pasb and present, have had little inclination to help along our industry, which, from a, commercial poiht, contributes more to its revenue than any other industry such as fruit and honey, both of which ar» being spooti-fed at the Dominion's expense."
