VISITORS ENTERTAINED

As a. " ■wind-up " to the day's events Duke Kahanamoku and party were the guests of the Wellington Swimming Centre at an enjoyable function held, at the Burlington Caie on Saturday evening. About forty persons were present, the chair being occupied by Mr. T. Ronayne (president ' of the Wellington Centre). After the toast of " The King " had been honoured, Mr. Konayne proposed "The Visitors." The speaker referred ' to Kahanamoku's marvellous performance in the afternoon,' and expressed the hope ■ that the stay oi the visitors in Wellington had been a pleasant one. He looked forward to the time when New Zealand would be able to produce swimmers who would emulate their Hawaiian visitor. They had excellent material in this country, and h© did not think it at all improbable that New Zealand would one day have &, " Duke" of her own. (Applause.) In responding to the toast, Mr. F. Ev*ns, manager of the visiting team, said that it was about the twentieth time he had had to speak in New Zealand. He would, therefore, cut short his remarks by thanking the host» heartily for ihe way the party had been entertained. Duke Kahanamoku and George Cunha also expressed their thanks for the treatment they had received in Wellington, the former adding, amid applause, that he hoped to be able to again visit New Zealand and show them, some more swimming. Mr. Harry Williams, a mem-" ber oi the New Zealand Swimming Association, wh* is conducting the team through the North Island, also replied, and in doing bo paid a compliment to the Wellington Centre for the manner in which that body had conducted the afternoon's carnival. Various other toasts were honoured during the evening, and in addition an enjoyablo musical programme was gone through.
