KHANDALLAH'S WATER SCHEME TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — Another dwelling-house at Khandal'ah. was totally destroyed by fire early this morning, and a house adjoining had a very narrow escape from being also burnt down. It was only owing, to the splendid efforts of the, owner and a few energetic neighbours that the house was saved. This house was occupied by a resident, his wife, and seven young children, and these good people passed through a most harrowing experience in saving their children from the threatened disaster. As the Mayor of Onslow has (in accordance with his pledge at his elec- , tion) a water scheme before the ratepayers, I would ask all ratepayers entitled to vote on the subject to consider that during the last four years thirteen houses have been entirely destroyed by fire, at a total loss of nearly £7000 assessed value. While I do not intend to convey the impression that a water supply in operation would have prevented all the loss, I do emphatically state that " some of these fires could have been prevented by water under pressure; and a large number of residents in the vicinity where these fires occurred know this statement to be a fact. I therefore hope, sir, that the fire that occurred this morning will assist those ratepayers, who are not at present inclined to support a water scheme, to consider the great assistance such water supply would be in preventing or minimising this unfortunate state of affairs. Thirteen fires in four years, all causing total destruction, calls for urgent attention of the whole district. — I am, etc., ERNEST C. ALDERSONr 6th March.
