STORM APPROACHING

.«, . The chart issued by the Weather Bureau on Saturday showed that the rise in the South was likely to be only temporary, and that the forecast indicated that the improvement which' took place yesterday would probably be of but brief duration. This is confirmed, according to the Government Meteorologist, by the indications to-day. A 6light fall in the barometer has already taken place in the southern districts, and although 'the barometer is less high in tho north a etorm aTea has developed of considerable intensity, and is forecasted to-day, and special warnings of a heavy northerly gale and stormy weather have been issued to-day, not only to the usual stations, but also to every post and telegraph office in the Wellington, Wanganui, and Taranaki districts, and to all stations in the South Island. A northerly gale may also be expected with stormy weather in the north, but the maximum intensity will be felt south of New Plymouth and Castlepoint. The change for the worse may be expected in Cook Strait within 24 to 36 hours. Much rain is probable on the West Coast and the southern districts, with rivers running high. The weather is likely to be warm on the East Coast districts of both ■ islands, with a hot north-westerly gale on the Canterbury Plains. After two or three days the prospect is for a change of wind in the southern districts to ' the south. Marlborough has already benefited greatly by the etorm which took place in the middle of the week, as good soaking rains are reported in parts that needed them very greatly. There is no immediate prospect of rain on the east coast of the North Island.
