o> MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The Lower Hutt Borough. Council met last evening, when tho following wore present : —The Mayor (Mr. 11. Baldwin), and Councillors Hobba, Ball, Parsonage, Brascll, Kempttiorne, Mcldruin, Hpdgins, Clendon, and Purdy. The postmaster at Lower Ilutt wrote advising that tho silencer had been attached to the post office clock chimes. It was resolved to supply the Superintendent of tho National Provident Fund with the necessary information" as to the council's intentions with regard to its employee. Tho usual public hall licenses were granted. St. Patrick's Day Sports Committee and the Hutt Amateur Athletic Club were granted the uso of the Recreation Ground on 17th March and 10th February respectively, on Iho u°ual conditions. A communication was, received from the Hutt Park Committee rcquoiting that the council grant a further sum of £2 10s, to brin? th« total grant up to the amount voted by the Pctonc Borough Council. ENGINEER'S DEPARTMENT.' The Engineer (Mr. W. J. Roche) reported that the dedication in Victoriastreet, at the High School, had been completed. It involved much more work than was at first anticipated. A good deal had also been done on the road, and he had every reason to believe that there would no longer be accumulation of water on that portion of tho road. The total cost of the work had boon £55 15s Brl. An area of the main street, 96 yards long lry 7 yards" wide, had been scarified, rolled, and then sprayed with restar, sanded, and rolled again, and then sprayed a second time and rolled again. On that area of 672 square yards the two coats had taken just ono-half of the total quantity of restar. The restar (a new preparation) was extromoly tenacious and elastic, and ho felt confident that it would givo good results. Five barrels of weedkiller came to hand, nnd had been used on the same ground as previously. What vas left was put on the footpath in Waterloo-road, between Witako-street and tho Woiwotu-road There wcro now 36 consumers on the • maintenance scheme, with 207 burners, an avorage of 5.75 burners per consumer. When ho reported on 25th September there wore 28 consumers with 158 burners, an average 0f'5.64 per consumer. Tho Western Hutt footpath ■was being prepared for tarring. Gravel was being spread, and tho tarring would be commenced as soon as tho restar had been put -on tho main road. Tenders were being called for tho removal of tho buildings on tho Rocroation Ground, late Wilkin's Estate. Two connections had heeh mado with tho gas mains, making tho total number of connections to date 516 Tho report was adopted.
