HUTT ROAD

MAINTENANCE PROBLEM. At last there is a possibility of settling the maintenance question in connection with the Hutt-road. It will be remembered that some time ago it was agreed that the City Council was the proper authority to undertake the maintenance of the road. 'The council was quite prepared to undertake the work, but there were no means by whicFi it could compel other boroughs to contribute their fair share towards the cost. An indemnity was asked for from the Government, so that the City Council might not find itself compelled to pay the whole of the charges. Yesterday the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Lukefhad a conference with the Minister for Railways (Hon. W. H. Herriee) and the Attorney-General (Hon, A. L. Herdman), and a set of proposals were agreed upon. These, tho Mayor told a Post reporter, he was prepared to recommend the council to adopt, and he thought they would prove satisfactory. A special meeting of the council is being called for Monday next, at 4 p.m. % If the council then approves the scheme the control and maintenance of the road will be taken over by the city immediately.
