SOUTHERN MARKETS

(8T TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION) CHRISTCHURCH, Bth January. The arrival of a shipment of wheat from Australia next week and shipments coming to hand this and next month from Canada, totalling in all a little over half a million bushels, will enable millers to caTry on until the new crop comes in. The imported wheat is to be resold at 5s 9d per bushel, but from the Premier's statement in regard to the proclamation to .be issued, it is not clear whether this price will also apply to locally-grown wheat. It is suggested by the Premier that the restrictions as to the price of wheat will be removed "when trie new crop is available. Even if the new crop turns out nearly as good as last year's, it will not produce sufficient for a year's requirements, and further importations before the next harvest will undoubtedly have to be made. If, however, supplies last until about the end. of the year, there should be no difficulty in obtaining shipments from Australia, as a much larger aTea is proposed to be sown this year, and there are now signs that the drought is breaking up. There was recently a decided rise in the prices of bran and pollard, owing to the demand from-Austr^lia, the former being raised to £7 and the latter to £7 10s for shipping, bran being 5s per ton more for local consumption. The export of both bran arid pollard has not, however, been prohibited, but no change in the prices has yet been made. Oats are firmer, as a good enquiry has set in, presumably from Australia, and etocks -are now very bare. It is reported that several samples of New Algerian have been seen, but no business is yet said to have taken place. Old A Grade oats are now worth 3e, and B Grade 2s lOd to 2s lid at country stations. Oateheaf chaff is very firm, but supplies aTe difficult to obtain, the price offered being £4 10s at country stations.
