MR. STATHAM'S SEAT

FRESH CONTEST PROBABLE. (BY TELEGRAPH— PKESS ASSOCIATION) DUNEDIN, 25th December. It is considered certain that steps will be taken to invalidate the Dunedin Central election, unless Mr. Statham resigns. Mr. Statham's attitude is no secret ; lie had no intention when he petitioned for a Magisterial recount of taking advantage of any technicality such recount might bring about in his favour, and while he feels he should have been elected in the first place, since 118 votes were obviously informal, he is not disposed to retain his scat unless convinced he can do so without the imputation of winning on the technicality. It is commonly reported that at present he means to resign and recontest the seat.
