LOCAL AND GENERAL Cable advice has been received from San Franci3co that the R.M.S. Maitai sailed from that port ffto t Wellington on Wednesday, the 9th instant, with 709 ■ bags of mail for New Zealand, and 691 bags for Australia. The Maheno, which left Sydney on the 9th instant for Auckland,' is bring ing Australian mails and also mails from United Kingdom via Suez. The Wellington portion is due per Main Trunk express on Monday afternoon. Yesterday evenihg the Miramar Fire Brigade was called out to extinguish a gorse fire at Karaka Bay, at the rear of Mr. J. Paul's residence. There was a good supply of water and the fire was suppressed after an hour's work. Fir*, man Alexander had the misfortune to fall about fifty feet, and was badly shaken, besides sustaining some cuts. An amicable agreement has been arrived at in the cases in which John Walden, Arno Arino, and Oscar Erola are charged with absenting themselves from the steamer Verdala without leave and refusing to obey the captains lawful command. The men objected to remaining on the vessel, as the latter was to be used ag a troopship. However, suitable arrangements have now been made, and it is understood that the men will not be penalised for their action. At the first general meeting of the Melrose Ratepayers and Electors' Association it was enthusiastically resolved to promote the welfare of the district, and where possible to co-operate with similar bodies to that end. The following members were elected an executive : —President, Mr. Brooker; vicepresident, Mr. F. Tonks ; hon. secretary, Mr. L. G. Chisholm ; hon; treasurer, Mr. G. G. Hooper; committee, Messrs. D. Aitken, H. Jones, and James. Three assault cases,, apparently arising out of yesterday's excitement, were I heard in tho Magistrate's Court to-day. One is reported elsewhere in this issue. Edgar Temby while drunk assaulted Constable Pearce, and this cost him a fine of £2, in default seven days in gaol. He was fined 5s for insobriety. Michael James, for some reason unknown, punched a bystander (whose name could not be ascertained), and was fined 10s for creating a breach of the peace. When arrested by Constable Dalbeth he resisted violently^ and for this he will have to go to gaol for three days unless he pays a fine of JE/1. A peculiar circumstance was revealed , in the Magistrate's Court to-day, when I application was made for the rehearing of a charge against Edward Ho\vp"d of driving a cab too fast round the corner of Boulcott and Willis steeets. Howard had already been convicted, but the ex* planation of the occurrence has just come to light A drunken man was i arrested in Boulcottnstreet and placed in a cab. The driver (Howard) was specially instructed to hurry to the station, and he obeyed. Unfortunately, a vigilant constable on point duty, not knowing the circumstances, reported the driver To-day Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., agreed to a withdrawal of the information and quashed the previous conviction. Mr. Hewitt, S.M., delivered a little homily on the subject of the cost of living at Kumara a few days ago, reports the Greymouth Star. The defendant in a judgment summons case said it took all he earned— something over £4 ? week —-to keep himself and family. The Magistrate said the trouble was not so much the cost of living as the standard of living. He knew there were hundreds of men with families who got no more than £2 10s per week and who lived decently and paid 20s in the £1. The trouble in New Zealand was the high standard of living— not the high cost. Here we had not yet felt the pinch of distress, but he was afraid that the time was not far off when we would, and the people would have to live* within their means. If a person could not afford butter, he should eat dry bread; if he could not afford meat he should go without it or get the cheapest joints. The Magistrate also stated too many such cases were coming before him. If a man honestly intended to pay he would endeavoui to do so He had nevei known anyone who really wanted to do a thing> and who put all his energy into trying to do it, to fail. Somewhat remarkable features attended the arrest of James Cashman in the election- night crowd in front of the Evening Post. Constable Hal' noticed Cashman seized a bystander, Thomas M'Whannell, by the throat. M'Whannell was nearly strangled, and the constable had to use force to separate the pair. While being taken to the Man-ners-street police station accused resisted violently. Then he quietened down. While at the station he fell to the floor, and caught the watchhouse-keeper (Constable Whitehouse) by the legs, and brought him down heavily. Cashman was extremely violent, and, getting two of the constable's fingers between his tectb he bit hard until he reached the bone. Further than that he did a certain amount of damage to property In the Magistrate's Court to-day Constable Whitebouse said that Cash- [ man had apparently had no drink, but | seemed to be suffering from a fit. Mr. H F. O'Leary (for accused) said that his client did suffer from fits, and in view of this he asked for lenient treatment. Mr. p. G. A. Cooper, S.M., imposed penalties of £1 in each of the cases of resisting the constable and assaulting M'Whannell, but he would take no action concerning the incidents at the police station. It was evident that Cashman did not know what he was doing. Another gift suggestion. For your friend that loves fancy work we recommend the "Home Art" series of fancy work books.
