"A TRIUMPH FOR DEMOCRACY".
MR. R. FLETCHER'S OPINION. Mr. R. Fletcher, the first to speak from the New Zealand Timts balcony, was received with great enthusiasm, .pc said : " 1 thank you very, very much for the high' and honourable position itt which you bave placed me to-day. The result to-day of my election has been a triumph for democracy. I want to tell you this, that not only in Wellington, but all through this country, democracy is returning to power. The fight, as fur as 1 am concerned, has been a big one. 1 have beaten a Minister of the Crown. I have had the newspapers against me, but 1 have come out with a fine* majority. My fight, as at last election, has been clean and strong. You will see by th» returns coming through that a wave of democracy is sweeping the whole of the country. Mr. Massey's own seat is ih danger. It would dp Mr. Massey good and the country good if he W6nt back to the farm for a little bit." The candi» date expressed his pleasure at having Mrs. Seddon beside him on th& platform^ He thanked his committees and his wife for valuable aid. " You can rest assured that the trust you have placed in me to-day will n6ver be betrayed."' (Cheers.)
