PROHIBITIONISTS AND MODERATES
THE PUBLIC MEETING. At a, meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Moderate League held yesterday attention was called to an advertisement appearing in last Saturday's Post announcing a meeting to be held on Friday evening next at the. Town to be presided over by the Mayor, at which an attack is to be made upon the League. The executive passed the following resolution : — "That as the name of the New Zealand Moderate League has been Used by the Prohibitionists in advertising a public meeting to be held in the Town Hall on Friday evening next, and as the advertisements indicate that an attempt is to be made to discredit the League in the public eye, the executive hereby resolves to be officially present at such meeting, and if found necessary will take part in the proceedings to safeguard the interests of the League and its members." A letter has also been sent to Mr. J. P. Luke, Mayor of Wellington, as follows:—"I beg to advise you that the executive of this League gathers from an advertisement appearing in the Evening Post of Saturday last, 21st instant, and from circulars distributed on Sunday last, that you are to preside, in your official capacity as Mayor of Wellington, at a meeting called for the purpose apparently of an attack by one section of the citizens upon the action of another section, which judging from the tone of the advertisements is likely to be of an acrimonious character. The League protests against the Chief Magistrate of the City appearing in such a role, but in any case we suggest that you should make such arrangements as will provide the executive of the body to be attacked with such accommodation as shall be necessary for its representation at the meeting by reserving half-a-dozen seats on the platform. Trusting, that you will see that this courtesy is extended to Hie League."
