FIERCE HAND-TO-HAND ENCOUNTERS A GERMAN CAMP SURPRISED (By Telegraph. — Press Association. — Copyright.} (Received October 16, 9.20 a.m.) PARIS, 15th October. For three weeks Roye was the scene of the fiercest hand-to-hand encounters. Hhe town and surrounding villages were taken and re-taken at least a dozen times. When the French re-captured Roye for the twelfth time they surprised a German camp among the low wooded hills. They attacked in the half-light of dawn. ' The Germans were thrown into confusion and were unable to locate the' direction of the attack, with the result that a thousand cavalry and a battalion of infantry were made prisoners.
