THE BILL FOR THE HUTT-ROAD

At Tuesday's meeting of tho Johnsonvillo Town Board the circular letter was received from the Minister of Railways, pointing out that as the various' local bodies interested in the Hutt-road had taken no steps to provide for tho maintenance of the Hutt-road, the Government intended to withdraw tho subsidy of £40,000, and would bring down the necessary legislation for the enforcement of the payment of the capital cost as well as the maintenance of the road. On the motion of Commissioner Moore the matter was left in the hands of the board's representative. Commissioner Jerusalem. A copy was also received from the City Solicitoi of the Hutt. Railway and Road Improvement Amendment Bill. The Chairman pointed out that at the last 'conference of local bodies it was unanimously agreed that the Bill in question should deal only with the upkeep and maintenance of the road, and any reference to the capital cost should be omitted. The board instructed Commissioner Jerusalem to object at the next conference of local bodies to the Bill in its present form.
