SPREADING LOG FIRES
RAIN BADLY NEEDED. (DI TELEGKAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.) DANNEVIRKE, 7th October. In many localities the fires are still burning fiercely, but fortunately tho gale has abated. If no further wind prevails little additional damage may be anticipated. Tho Ruaroa district has suffered severely, fivo houses being destroyed there. Settlors also havo Bitstained heavy losses. Several empty houses were destroyed, while early on Wednesday morning the fires were- dangerously closo to tho township, showers of sparks falling near the hall and school. i Fortunately none of tho adjaeeht buildings caught, otherwise the town would probably have been destroyed. 1 Miles of fencing in various parts have boon devoured by tho names, and also numerous outbuildings, while the losses to stock are reported to be considerable, though definite figures are not ascertainable. Rain is badly needed, otherwise much further damage will bo done.
