MINES IN THE ADRIATIC
ANNOUNCEMENT BY FRENCH MINISTER FOR MARINE (Received October 8, 10 a.m.) PARIS, 7th October. The Minister of Marine has announced that French mines are now anchored in the Adriatic. They are provided with the safeguards prescribed by The Hague Convention of 1907. MARSHALL ISLANDS SEIZURE OF JALUIT BY THE JAPANESE TOKIO, 6th October. Official. —Japanese bluejackets seized Jaluit, the capital of the Marshall Islands, unopposed, and-captured the fortifications, arms, and ammunition, and released the British sliip3 in port. The Navy Department explains that the occupation is for military purposes and not permanent. [The Marshall Islands, a group in the Western Pacific, wer* annexed by Germany in 1885. Bisected by lOdeg. north latitude, and having the Caroline group to the west, it consists of two parallel chains of low coral reefs—one, the Ratak group, consisting of thirteen islands (forty-eight square miles), the other, the Ralik group, eleven islands (107 square milea). The native population of the group is about 15,000.]
