FIGHTING LINE EXTENDING MORE AND MORE PARIS, 6th October (Evening). [ Official.—Our front on the left is extending more and more. Very large I -masses of 'German cavalry are reported in the neighbourhood of Lille, preceding forces moving to the north of the Tourcoing-Armentieres line. The situation on the right bank of the Somme is appreciably maintained. Alternate advances and retirements have occurred between the Somme and the Oise. The enemy unsuccessfully attempted a heavy attack at Lassigny. We made a slight advance, with tho co-operation of British, north of • Soissons, and some progress has been made in the Berryaubae district. The position is unchanged elsewhere. [Tourcoing is six^ miles north of Lille, and Armentieres nine miles northwest of Lille. The distance between the two places is twelve miles. Lassigny is fifteen miles north of Compiegne. Soissons is a fortified city on the left bank of the Aisne, twenty milea south-west of Laon.] PRIME MINISTER'S ADVICE. - The Prime Minister has received the following message from the High Commissioner: — LONDON, 6th October, 1914. Paris reports officially that some progress has been made in the Berryaubae district. With the co-operation of the British a slight advance was made north of Soissons. Between the Somme and the Oise there have been alter- . nate advances and retirements. The Germans attacked in strength near Lassigny, but failed. The front is extending more on-the Allies' left-wing. Large masses of the enemy's cavalry and other forces are moving through the district north of Roubaix, near Lille.
