THE FRENCH CIRCLE

RESULTS OF THE ANNUAL EXAMINATION. The examiners recently appointed to conduct the competition for a gold medal and a. silver medal offered by the French Circle in Wellington presented their report at the last meeting of the circle. Twenty-six young people were examined, a.s against twenty last year. The efficiency | shown by the candidates waa 'as a, whole superior to that of last year. Five candidates gained 75 per cent, of marks. The examiners recommended :— (1) That the gold medal be awarded Miss Iris Wopdnouse, of Wellington Girls' College, 89 5-12ths per cent. (It is worthy of note that, after comparison was made of the marks allotted by each "examiner to the various competitors, it was found that this candidate had been given highest marks by each examiner). (2) That the silver medal be ' awarded Miss Phyllis Mather, also of Wellington Girls' College, 81 l-12th per cent. The marks gained by Master Clifford Bowler, of St. Patrick's College, who obtained third place, were only l-3rd per cent, below thosr> o£ Miss Phyllis Mathor. (3) That certificates of honourable mention be awarded those (pandidates (other than the first two) who obtained over 75 per cent., \iz., Master Clifford Bowler, St. Patrick's College, 80| per cent. ; Miss Doris Hulme, Wellington Girls' College, 75 7-12thB per cent. ; Miss Dorothy Mainland, Wellington Girlo' College, 75 13-24ths per cent. (4) That, in order to encourage those who had been studying French for a comparatively short period, certificates of good progress bo awarded to Miss Nessie Moncrieff, Wellington Girls' College, 70 5-6ths per cent. ; Miss Jessie Shoi-land, Wellington Girls' College, 69 2-3rds per cent. The' report was adopted. It is intended to present tho medals and certi-. ficates at the annual fete to be held at 'the end of the current- session of the circle. Tho examiners were Madame Dechanet-Maclntoeh, Madame Deeleene, and Messrs. H. L. Lattey and J. H. Chapman. ,
