FIRE WASTE

SOME BIG FIGURES. In the course of his annual report to the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Inspector of Fire Brigades (Mr. T. Hugo) states that the total fire loss for the year ended 31st December last amounted toi £84.367, as far as the twenty-two fire districts are concerned. The insured loss throughout the Dominion, which the inspector says was probably under-esti-mated, was £484,462, an increase of £58,130 compared with the previous year. He comments as follows : "Following the .same line of deduction as adopted in previous years, and adding 333 perc ent, to the insured loss, so as to arrive at the approximate fire waste, the total loss for the year ended 31st December, 1913, is thus shown to be £645,949— -an increase of £70,088 as compared with 1912, but an increase of £77,506 when compared with the average for the nine preceding years."
