FEDERAL CIVIL SERVICE. NO RETRENCHMENT. (Received October 6, 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Mr. W. M> Hughes (Attorney-General) states that the Federal Government does not intend to retrench in the public services, but intends setting an example to private enterprise in matters of employment. Referring to defence matters Mr. Hughes said it was clear Australia must get more ships, which she must build here. The war would decide what type was best fitted for modern warfare.
