BATTLE OF AUGUSTOW GERMANS ROUTED; RUSSIANS IN HOT PURSUIT

They are fleeing, hotly pursued, towards the frontier, and are abandoning convoys, guns, munitions, and wounded." ENEMY'S DEFEAT COMPLETE Th© Prime Minister has received the following message from {he High Commissioner in London:— LONDON, sth October, 4.15 p.m. OfiScial.— Battle of Augustow ended Saturday. Victory for Russians. German defeat complete. Enemy now in disorderly retreat towards frontier of Prussia. Russians vigorously pursuing.' On left bank Vistula and in Galicia ■Huation unchanged. \ DETAILS OF FIGHTING AT OSSOWIETZ PETROGRAD, 4th October. Details Of the fighting at Ossowietz, in the north of Poland, and sixteen ttriles from the German frontier, show that the Germans were unable to use their heavy guns in the marshy ground. The infantry, with machine guns, advanced witliin four miles of the fortress. The Russians sortied at night and enveloped both wings. The fortress guns moved down the Germans in masses in the centre. Simultaneously the Russian infantry attacked the wings. After thirty-six hours' fighting the Germans -were routed, and all their heavy guns were captured. 'PETROGRAD, sth October. After their defeat at O9sowietfc the Germans were hurled back on Gralwo, aesr the frontier, the road to which was strewn with corpses. REPEATED ATTEMPTS TO CROSS THE NIEMEN PETROGjRAD, 4th October. Details of the Germans' repeated attempts to cross the River Niemen, northward of Grodno, show that the Russian rearguard was transferred on •23rd September to the right bank of the river. The Germans, not noticing «igns of opposition, constructed pontoons and poured troops across. The dftverly-screened Russian guns opened a concentrated fire, sweeping the Germans by hundreds into the rivet- A prolonged artillery duel followed, and the Germans again attempted to cross, but none Reached the opposite bank. PETROGRAD, sth October. After their Second attempt to cross the Niemen, the Germans made a last desperate effort in the evening. Columns in close formation proceeded to tfae crossing, and again every man_ was mowed down by machine guns, and finally the German batteries were silenced. The enemy retreated eight miles, »nd the Cossacks, crossing by the enemy's pontoons, pursued and harassed them. One account says that 20,000 Gei'mati corpses floated down the Nieraen. RUSSIAN RESERVES CALLED OUT , PETROGRAD, sth October. Before he departed for the front, the Tsar called out the reserves, and over eight million Russians have now been mobilised.
