LOWER HUTT BOROUGH

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The usual meting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening, the following being present :— The Mayor '(Mr. H. Baldwin), and Councillors Ball, Bobbs, Purdy, Parsonage, Clcndon, BraBell, Kempthorne, Meldr'um, and Hodgins. A ratepayer *vas granted financial astsisiance'to make drainage connections. The Secretary of the Department of Agriculture wrote advising that enquiries were being made into the matter of goree oft the Normandale Settlement la oil. St. John Ambulance Association was granted the use of the Council Cham bers every Tuesday evening, free of charge, for the purpose of giving lectures in first aid. The Health Inspector notified two caeca of infectious diseases within the borough. ENGINEER'S DEPARTMENT. The Engineer (Mr. W. J. Roche) submitted his usual report, which stated that several footpaths had been prepared for tarring and sanding at a total cost of £76 lls Bd. In connection with the preparation of Pretoria-street footpath it was decided to do the kerbing and channelling at the western end at the same time. This work was now proceeding. No connections had been made with the gas mains', and only one with the water mains, making the total number of water connections to date 975. No house sewerage -connections had been issued since last meeting. Th_6 work of repairing the generator was working satisfactory progress. The firebrick lining Was also being made, and they should both be ready for erection at abonfc the same time.
