GALAXY OF BLOOMS

♦ — ■ — AT HUTT VALLEY FLOWER SHOW LIST OF AWARDS. ' An event that is eagerly looked forward to by all lovers of flowers is the spring show of the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society. This year's show, which was opened yesterday (and the proceeds of which are being devoted to the Belgian Relief Fund), attracted a.n unusually big crowd, which thronged the Town Hall throughout the afternoon, admiring the magnificent- display of blooms both on the exhibition stands and on the competition tables. The exhibits ranged from the commonest bulb to the most rare and expensive, there being several specimens which cost many pounds per bulb. The different varieties of narcissi were particularly beautiful, while great interest centred in Mr. T. Waugh's stand, which was enhanced by two flowering Japanese cherry and palm plants. In declaring the show open, His Excellency the Governor said that it was little expected that since he last met them such stirring times would befall the Empire. He considered tlie objects of the show most worthy, as the primary cause of Britain's participation in tho war was to protect Belgium. Private cablegrams had been received by him showing that the citizens of Great Britain appreciated to the fullest extent the great rally that had been made round the flag. After further remarks His Excellency concluded amid applause. In the course of tho proceedings vocal items were rendered by Mrs. Patten, Misses Caldow and Segrief, and Mr. E. J. Hill. THE AWARDS.
