REIGN OF TERROR
IN SERB PROVINCES OP AUSTRIA A GIBBET IN EVERY VILLAGE. MILAN, 11th September. Refugees state that a reign of terro* , exists in the Serb provinces of Austria. There is a gibbet m every village, and every day there hang therefrom fresh corpses. Hardly a Serb leader has escaped arrest. Sopilo, the Nationalist leader in the Diet at Agram, is believed to have been executed. Most of th© prominent citizens are held as hostages. The people in many of the poor districts are dying of starvation. SLAV TROOPS DESERT. ROME, 10th September. It is stated that the_ number of desertere from the Austrian army is increasing daily, ©specially on the Rumanian frontier. Many have gone to Switzerland. The average desertfioiii from the Slav regimente has reachodr 34 per cent.
