FRACAS IN AUCKLAND
POLICE AND FRENCH SAILORS. (BY TELEGHAPH— PEESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, 11th September. An exciting incident occurred on tho French barque Chateau D'lf to-night, when the police went to anest a sailor alleged to be concerned in a & tabbing affray the previous evening. The polic« handcuffed their aiwn in the bottom of the hold, and when they reached the second hold some of the crew of the. barque, numbering between 20 and 30, rushed the prisoner. One of the constables picked up the prisoner, and two of the others endeavoured to protect him front the crew. At least on© knife was drawn, but eventually the police succeeded in reaching the wharf with their charge, after an exciting fifteen minutes.
