LEAVING LUNEVILLE
GERMANS EVACUATE THE HILLS A STRONG STRATEGIC POINT. (Received September 10, 8 a.m.) PARIS, 9th September. The Germans have evacuated the hills around Luneville. [Virtually in the centre of the Franco-German frontier 1 , and on the main line to Strasbourg, is Luneville. Half-way between it and Blamont is the strong fort known as Manonvillier, which commands the railway as it passes from the French Avricfcurt to the German. It is a fort which is thoroughly up to date. Its armoured cupolas are cased with concrete to make them' more resistant to high explosives, and the powerful double, fort is to>be reckoned a. difficult proposition for any attacking force. As for Luneville itself, it is not fortified, but it is in normal circumstances a highly important headquarters for cavalry. The four divisions quartered here are specially detailed for service on the spot, and presumably are still on duty to harass 1 the enemy and prevent the formation of an organised attack.]
