CAPTURE OF A FORTRESS

(Received September 9, 8.20 a.m.) PETROGRAD, Bth September. The Russians have occupied Nikolaieff. The Austrians are in full retreat. (Received September 9, 9.30 a.m.) PETROGRAD, Bth September. The Russians captured the strong fortifications at Nikolaieff, where theguns were mounted in armoured cupolas. The fort, with its guns and a quantity of ammunition, was seized. [The operations referred to in the above messages are> chiefly connected with the Lemberg campaign. Krasnytsav is in Poland, about thirty miles south-east of Lublin, and about half-way between that town and the frontier, and nearly in line between Lublin and Lemberg. The Opole River, whero the Russians expect a great battle, is a small tributary running into the right or east bank of the River Vistula a short distance west of Lublin. The Opole gives its name to a plain which, like others in the locality, is so low-lying that it is liable to be flooded by the waters of the Vistula, which sometimes inundates land as far as 150 miles to the east. Nikolaieff, or Nikolajensk, is a fortified place at the point where Russia, Austria, and Germany meet. It is on tho frontier opposed to Myslowitz, Kattowitz, and Konigshutte, on. the * German angle, and Szczakowa, Chrzanow, and Cracow on the Austrian line. All these places are within a radius of about thirty mile£ from the meeting place of^ the frontiers. Norodok, or Nadorzczie, is apparently a small town in Galicia, in the angle between the convergence of the Vistula from the west and the San River from the south-east, 200 miles from Lemberg, west by north.]
