THE EXPEDITION
CONFERENCE OP OFFICERS PROCEEDING TO-DAY. A conference of senior officers of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, which is shortly to leave for Europe, was opened at the Wellington Garrison Officers' Club, at the Drill Hall, Bucklestreet, this morning. Major-General Siu Alexander Godley, Officer Commanding, presided, and the conference was attended by officers from the Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago districts. The proceedings, which were conducted in camera, had relation to matters connected with the expedition, and it is expected will be concluded this afternoon. NEGLECTED ARTILLERYMEN. When addressing the troops it Palmerston North recently, Major-General Godley, referring to the artilleryman, declared that they were as line a body * of men as he had eeen in any part of the world. Tho compliment was one which was -well deserved, but notwithstanding the men are being almost wholly neglected so far as presents from the public are concerned, while the other units in camp are having gifts showered upon them. Tim is accounted for in the fact that the artillery brigade is a national unit drawn from all over the Dominion, while the other units m camp, such as mounted regiment and infantry regiment are essentially local ones, being drawn from the regiments in the- Wellington district. With the other units being continually presented with gifts the artillerymen naturally feel that they are being neglected, and the authorities accordingly would be glad if the public, in their generosity, will not overlook the men who are to serve behind the guus>. The following gifts would prove highly acceptable:— One typewriter, a gramaphone with selections, periodicals of all descriptions, pairs of. boots, four bicycles, fieldglasses, etc. Cakes and buns and pipe covers to prevent ashes being blown about when smoking will also be thankfully received by the Field Artillcrv Brigade, comprising some 700 men. Ail gifts sent to Murray, , Roberts, and Co., Wellington, will be ' forwarded to the ship.
