UNDER FALSE COLOURS
GOEBEN DOES DAMAGE AT ALGERIAN TOWN. LONDON, 7th September. The Capper. Alexander and Company's steamer Isle of Hastings reports that on 4th August the Goeben, flying a Russian flag, appeared at Phihppeville. A forti* fled town of Algeria. Th#n she hoisted the German flag, and fired at the shore, with the object of exploding the magazine. Many shots passed over the lslft of Hastings, which was lying in the port. The crew hod uairow escapes. The magazine shed was destroyed, thirteen Zouaves were killed, and fifteen thousand rounds of ammunition blown up. [It is permitted by international law for a warship to fly colours other than those of her own nation, but she must fly her own flag before firing.]
