AMONG THE ISLANDS
GERMAN ACTIVITIES A STEAMER'S ADVENTURES. (Received September 8, 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The Gulf Line steamer Messina, from Nauru (just under the Equator and west of the Gilbert Archipelago), reports that the island is under martial law. A week before she left, the Germans attempted to capture the steamer. They detained the captain for six hours, but eventually liberated him. He rejoined the steamer at Ocean Island, the chief officer having managed to N get the steamer away. Nothing was seen of the German squadron. The island has ft powerful wireless station, and the fleet was undoubtedly in touch with it, as incredible exaggerations of German victories were posted. The Pronto, which was chartered to patrol the islands, conveyed the news that three German warships were cruising in the region of Ponape (Ascension Island, near Fanning Island), and the Germans were anticipating their arrival to take them off.
