PRICE OF MEAT INCREASED IN AUCKLAND

(BT TELEGRAPH— SPECIAL to 188 fOSt.) AUCKLAND, This Day. A general rise of £d to Id per lb on prime cuts of beef and of Id. per lb on moat cuts of mutton has been decided upon by_ the Auckland Master Butchers* Association, and will take effect from to-day. A rise of £d per lb on veal and Id per lb on pork was declared on, 7th July last, and accordingly no further increase has been made in these classes. Lamb, of which very little is offering at. this time of the year, is also unchanged. All steak undercut, prime ribs, top sides, thick flank, tripe, kidneys, suet, ana sausage meat have been advanced id, sirloins, wing ribs, and other superior mits (including whole shinß, legs, and loins) have been advanced 3d. The £d rise on mutton covers everything except kidneys, tongues, heads, and frys. When interviewed, Mr. S. Wing, rnaii' ager of R. and W. Hellaby, Ltd., said tne i rise had been made necessary by a variety of causes, the chief of winch was tho high price of stock resulting from heavy export orders. The exporters were tumbling over one another to secure beef and mutton for the Home markets, and were now offering about 3s a hundred more for beef-fto cite only one classarid thei-e i was every prospect that still higher prices would be offered. Local rates were, of course, ruled by the London market, and if London prices rose, New Zealand prices must inevitably do the same. Another factor was, the effect of the war on the hide and tallow market. Hides had already dropped by 10s to 12s and sheepskins by 2s to 3s. No tallow whatever had been sold of late owing to the prevailing bad conditions. This must have an effect on the price of meat as at ordinary times the by-products were of the greatest importance in the trade.
