DEATH OF MR. H. J. FREEMAN

The death is announced of Mr. H. J. Freeman, who for many years has carried on the business of watchmaker and jeweller in Manners-street, lie xvas a nativo of Cambridge, England, but was roared in London. He was born 78 years ago, and at the ago of 18 he determined to emigrate to Australia. Ho sailed in the chip Northumberland during December, 1852, and Melbourne was not reached until May of the 'following year. Ten years were spent in tho goldfields of Victorin, more particularly about Ballaral. It was here that the deoeaeed gentleman met the lato_ Mr. Charles Campbell (for pome time his partner), xvho predeceased him by eight weeks. Together they passed through many stirring adventuree, both at their trade and at mining. In 18651 the late Mr. Freeman came over to Otago at the time of tho Molytieatix rush, subsequently returning to Melbourne. While in the Victorian capital he received from Mr. Campbell a copy of the first J6suc of Tho Evening Pott (Bth February, 1865), and wa6 asked to join his lato partner at Wellington, which town was going to be the seat of Government.
