— ■ —^ CIGARETTES ON THE TRANSPORTS. When the House of Representatives met last night Mr. Dickson asked the Minister of Defence if he was aware that instructions had been given to prohibit the sale of cigarettes on the transports taking tie Expeditionary Force away from New Zealand. The Hon. J. | Allen said it was quite true that the Quartermaster-General at first included cigarettes in the troopships' supplies, but the General Officer Commanding decided not to allow them on the ground that they were regarded as unsafe. That being so he (the Minister) could not refuse his approval to the course that had been adopted. The Minister was asked by ilr. Young as to the appointment of a Civil Agent at the base of the Expeditionary ForceHe replied that the matter was under consideration. The present proposal was to ask tho 'High Commissioner' to make arrangements ror the reception of any gifts send to the troops and to distribute them. As soon as possible the Department -would jlotify the public of what class of goods were acceptable. In answer to another question the Minister stated that permission had been given to Mr. G. H. Scholefield, of the New Zealand Press Agency in London, to accompany thb New Zealand Expeditionary Force to Europe, as representing the Dominion.
