HIGH-PRICED POTTERY.
Extraordinary prices were paid at a recent Christie's Bale for fine porcelain, tapestry, furniture, and other -works of art, a total of about £50,000 being realised by 140 lots. The biggest price was that paid for a Chinese beaker, of inverted j.ear-shape, with brilliant black enamel ground and floTal and other decorations in green, 27in high, of the Ka.ng-He period ; bidding was started at 1000 guineas, and at 4800 guineas it fell to Mr. Gorer. No such price has been .paid in England before for a piece of black enamel porcelain. Another beaker of the same period, with yellow ground, 18ln high, was also purchased by Mr. Gorer for 4400 guineas.
