Referring to the treatment of natives in the Islands, Professor Macmillan Brown, of Christclmrch, who arrived in Wellington to-day from a tour of the New Hebrides, said that the conditions were practically slavery, owing to the lack of proper supervision. Consequent* ly they were a failure. There was kidnapping, and the engagements which the natives entered into were longer than they should have been, according to the indentures. Large numbers of natives died on the plantations, and labour was becoming scarce. Through the bursting of a, steam pipe on tho Ulimaroa, at the Queen's Wharf this morning, Mr. Robert M'Phcrson. tho fourth engineer, was severely scald* ed on both feet. After he had been attended to on board the vessel he was removed to, the Hospital. The price of milk in Wellington, which has stood at fivepence per quart during tlie winter months, was reduced to fourpence per quart to-day. , A notice regarding the election of members of fcho Johnsouvillo Town Board is advertised in this issue.
