A DRY AUGUST

CHANGE IN WEATHER CONDITIONS PROBABLE.

GENERAL RAINFALL EXPECTED.

A change has come over 'the local weather conditions, and to-day the skies have been leaden and light rain has fallen. Tho Meteorological Office reports that one westerly area passed on Saturday night and another holds sway today. Tho weather is dull and cloudy in most parts of the country, and rain has been experienced. Tho forecast is for westerly winds, increasing strong to gale generally, and changing to southerly shortly. Rain is probable generally with snow on the higher 'levels in the south, and flooded rivers on the West Coast and southernmost districts of the South Island. The month of August has been an exceptionally dry one in Wellington, as compared with previous years. Only 1.16 inches of rain have fallen on eight days only, whereas last year the rainfall 'for the corresponding month was 4.30 inches on twenty-five days. Our Dunedin correspondent telegraphs that the month Just closed is probably the driest August experienced in Dunedin for many years. It is now some 29 days since there were anything like wintry conditions. During this period rain t"ell only on throe occasions, and that was at night, and only just sufficient to "lay tho dust." Gardens in and about the city bear evidence of the lack oE moisture, and in many cases watering as per hose has been resorted to. The dry weather would also appear to have extended to the other side of tho Tasinan Sea. A passenger by the. Sydney boat to-day states that owing to the lack of rain in South Australia the city of Adelaide is 400,000,000 gallons r-hort of its normal water supply, und tho use of water for gardens has i been prohibited.
