24th July. In the Southern Command orders for l?it week the following names appear as ha\ing qualified at the tactical fitness examination for pi emotion to lieutenantcolonel : Major G. S. Richardson, N.Z.5.0. ; Major M. M. Gardner. R X.Z A. Mr. J. F. M. Mills, son or Sir James and Lady Mills, has been at Jesus Colluge, Cambridge, since October last, and will probably lemain there another two years. During the vacation Mr. Mills had been attached to a line regiment and will go through the summer manoeuvres on Salisbury Plain. When the Land Court arrived at Baltasound. in Sc6tland, a few days ago to investigate a number of cases of hardship in the matter of land tenure, one of the crofters, Magnus Clark, said they were glad to see the Court, but revaluation was not the most important question. The trouble was that people could not get enough land and were gradually lea-ving tht place About thirty ha^ gone away since last year, chiefly to New Zealand. Lieutenant W. W. A. Burn, of the New Zealand Staff Corps, who has been in England for the past two years training, and has devoted himself lately to aviation, leaves this week for home by tho Corinthic. Miss M. E. Maginnity, of the Department of Internal Affairs, who has been on a' few months' leave of absence in England, underwent 4 successful operation last week. She will leave for home on sth August. The operation was performed by Dr. Muecke. Colonel V. S. Smyth came Home as a shipmate of General Sir lan Hamilton and Brigadier-General Ellison. He has been attach'cd for one year from 17th August to the Southern Command at Aldershot. ' ', Colonel F. F. Hill, D.5.0.", has been appointed to- succeed „ General E. H. Davies, C.8., in command of the 6th Infantry Brigade at Aldershot when the latter's term expires in October. Colonel Hill served in the Soudan campaign of 1884 and the Boer war, and has been on half pay for some years. General Sir lan Hamilton, who reached London during the week-end, expresses himself as delighted with his tour, which he hopes will be as profitable in its results to the dominions concerned as it has been interesting and pleasing to himself. At the meeting of the Associated Board of the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music it Was announced that Miss Audiey T. Gib&on, of Christchurch, had been awarded an exhibition ior pianoforte playing. Mr. I. J. Rothschild ( Wellington) -'is returning by the Otranto on 14th August, at the conclusion of a brief business visit. He has yot to go to Switzerland and Holland. Mr. W. Brown (Lower Hutt) with his son, Mr. Percy Brown, will be hern till Novpmbar t when they, are to 'leave for the Continent for two months, going on thence to Egypt for a fortnight, stopping in Ceylon for two weeks and then having a. f trip in^ India. They cam* 5 via New Guinea, Java, Bate via, Singapore, and I Colombo. Now they arfc seeing Holland, Belgium, and Switzerland, 'taking a five weeks' tour. On the termination of tliis round there will still be time for a comprehensive round of travel in the British Isles. Sir Denis Anson is stated to have died intestate, leaving as next of kin his mother. Mrs. F. A. Anson, who renounced probate. At the conclusion of a stay in London aud Glasgow, Dr. Wilson has gone on to Edinburgh to do some poet-graduate study. Later in the year he will visit Vienna and Berlin with a similar purpose. Aetdn CMef Chemist to tho Department of Agriculture, has gone down to Cornwall to spend a week with Mr. T. A.' Dorrfen-Smith at his interesting place Tresco Abbey, in the Scilly Isles. Mr. Dorrien-Smith was a year or two ago in New Zealand and have many New Zealand plants in the Scillies. Next week Mr. Aston will probably leave for Germany. Major H. 0. Know, A.S.C., who has jnst returned from occupying the position, of Quartermaster : General to the^ New Zealand Forces, has gone on retired pay. Major W. B. N. Madocks, who was A.D.C. to Colonel Pole-Penton when the lattpr- was commanding in New Zealand, has just been promoted from command of the 40th Battery, R.F.A., to ha chief instructor at the Royal Military Academy. The appointment dates from Ist August. Kver since hpr arrival in England some months ago, Miss Russell, daughter of tho late Mir William Russell, lias been under treatment for her arm, which was .seriously hurt in a motor-car accident in j New Zealand. An operation took place I recently, and the arm is now out of ' splints, but unfortunately at present the I patient does not think she has derived much benefit. Mr. G. Mayo Kebbell (Wellington) is on board the Corinthic, which tailed this moruiupt for Wellington.
