SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

It is not generally known that one of the functions of the St. John Ambulance Brigade is to render .assistance to the military authorities in time of need. The members of the various ambulance and nursing divisions are fully alive as to their responsibilities with respect to this branch of their work, and there has lately been a considerable amount of activity manifested in placing everything in readiness for the carrying out of any special duties may be required. The Defence Department has recognised the St. John Ambulance Brigade as the organisation to which it will look for any assistance required to supplement the field ambulances, and thus places it in the same position as a Red Cross Society in other lands. The. brigade is to form the ambulance section of the recentlyformed National Reserve, and»it 'would be well for holders of all first-aid certificates, whether St. John, St. Andrew, or any other organisation, to at once • communicate with the local brigade authorities. Already many applications have been received. A patriotic ball — arranged by the staff of Bellamy's— took place last night in the Victoria Hall, Newtown, under the patronage of the Hon. F. M. B. Fisher, the Mayor, Dr.' Newman, M.P., and Mr. Hindmarsh, M.P. Nearly two hundred guests were present, and the fund should receive a good sum as a result. During the evening, musical selections were given by Miss Bradney, Messrs. P. O'Connor, Marshall, Ebbelwaite, and C. Flattery. The Dresden Piano Company kind \ supplied a piano for the evening. Williams'B orchestra played, and, of course, Bellamy's kitchen staif saw that the supper was all that could be desired. The officers of the dance were : — Chairman, Mr.* C. Robinson; secretary, Mr. -E. J. Presnall ; Treasurer, Mr. A. Jones ; committee, Messrs. H. Wellbourne, H. Woodward, J. Hill, C. Brown, B. Starr, J. Thompson, T. Folan, A. Jones, C. Flattery ; JNl.C.'s, Messrs. H. Coones, W. Balch, G. Trillo. Mrs. Foley was the pianist. A satisfactory meeting of the Girln' Peace Scouts was held. A large number of representative girls, anxious to begin work, attended, and the committee is more than satisfied. Plans for ambulance work, hockey, and signalling were discussed, two girls giving an interesting demonstration of the latter. It is hoped that older girls will take up the movement, which is so appropriate a ono at this crisis. Mrs. Garfick has consent ed to be president during Lady Godley's absence. Mrs. Jackson, Of Tinakori-road, and her daughters leave to-morrow for Christchurch. Mrs. Yon Haast returned fromßotorua last week. Mrs. Birkefct is back from her visit to Mrs. George Hume, ir the Wairarapa. Mrs. M. Cohen and Miss Cohen, who have been staying at the Hotel Windsor, are returning to Dunedin on Friday. Staying at the hotel are : — Mr. and Mrs. Thornton ' (Hastings), Mr. and Mrs. G. c. Ranby (Feilding), Mr. and Mrs. T. Pargeter (Wanganui), Mrs. R Bartley (Auckland), Miss Thompson (Invercargill). The Poneke Football Club gives its annual ball in St. Peter's Schoolroom next month. The proceeds will go to the local Relief Fund. The chaperones are Mesdames Dawson, Elliott, Gardiner ; and the committee : Mesdame» Griffiths, Pavitt, Misses Hickey, Lang/ Tilyard (2), M'lnerney (2), Burns, Ros^ Matson, Messrs.
