AN ULTIMATUM
GERMANY TO BELGIUM LATTER REFUSES TO ACCEDE TO THE DEMAND SUPREME APPEAL TO BRITAIN.
(By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright.) (Received August 5, 9.5 a.m.) LONDON, 3rd August. Germany has sent an ultimatum to Belgium demanding the military use of Belgian territory. An answer is demanded by 7 o'clock this morning. The Daily Exchange states that Belgium has refused. The German Embassy in London has announced that Germany is prepared to abstain from attacking the north-?&st ,,( ? north-west) coast of France or to use the Belgian and Dutch coasts if Britain will remain neutral for the time being. It is argued that thus Britain would render the maximum assistance to France without going to war. Sir Edward Grey, speaking in the House of Commons, said the Belgian King had telegraphed a supreme appeal to Great Britain to safeguard Belgium's integrity. He did not know whether there had been an ultimatum to Belgium. If so, it was clearly Britain's obligation to do her utmost to prevent the consequences. The Fleet had been moblised^and the Army was mobilising, but the Government had not yet promised to send an expeditionary army abroad. 1 . (Eeeeived August 5, 9.35 a.m.) LONDON, 3rd August. Belgium's refusal to accede to the German demands is semiofficially oaafirmed.
